Barcelona superstar Gerard Pique has invested $4.3 million in Sorare. He has joined the seed that was started by the Cassius family, which has accumulated a total of 8.6 million to the platform. Sorare has also announced that Pique will be a strategic advisor for the platform beside the board members, including co-founders Nicolas Julia and Adrien Montfort, and Christain Miele.

Sorare is a platform that uses Ethereum’s blockchain to create digital player cards which can be used to build fantasy soccer teams or can be traded for real money.

Pique has commented his decision stressing that he is looking forward to helping Sorare expand their partnerships with football leagues, clubs, and players.

“I see a huge potential in the sports gaming segment in a digital economy where the attention of audiences is the single most important unit of currency. I’m looking forward to helping Sorare expand their partnerships with football leagues, clubs, and players worldwide to build the best fantasy experience that exists”, he said.

He further said that he got inspired because, as a kid, he used to trade physical football cards. Pique further stressed that the world of football must innovate.

“I was a fan of soccer cards since I was a kid. You had to go and buy a pack of stickers and collect all the players. As an entrepreneur, I think the world of football has to innovate. At the end of the day, it’s the next step, the next generations will collect these kinds of assets and digital cards,” the Barcelona player said.

Further, he pointed out that it is better to start doing these things as a player, since when reaching retirement “there’s a big hole where you don’t know what to do”. Moreover, he stated that he is looking forward to diversifying his portfolio.

Sorare CEO Nicolas Julia further showed his excitement at the appointment of Pique within the team as “an active entrepreneur” who is “re-defining the sports and entertainment industry.”

“Gerard will help us strike the best deals with the biggest sports organizations in the world,” Sorare CEO Nicolas Julia told CoinDesk.

Furthermore, 2020 for Sorare was a good year as according to their report they grew over 1,000% during the year.

Crypto.com did a survey earlier this year where 47% of correspondents had heard of NFT, and among these, 63% of them had only a basic understanding about it, while 57% of them had never used them.

Moreover, 2020 has been a great year for cryptocurrencies with Bitcoin as a leader, reaching its all-time high $24,225 on Dec 20, 2020.

Decentralized Finance (DeFi) is also on the rise. Many companies have begun to see the importance of blockchain technology and have begun to apply it.

The institutionalization of Bitcoin, driven by Paypal, that added crypto services into its platform earlier this year has caused a cryptocurrency bull run. Experts predict an increase in Bitcoin investments in the future, and consequently an increase in the price of Bitcoin.
